MGIEP’s Roundtable on Education for Humanity

In September 2015, 193 countries agreed to achieve 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. SDG 4 called on all stakeholders to “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.”

Was this a sufficient or even a sustainable goal? Are the current systems of education adequate and only requiring expansion of access and quality?  Shouldn’t we seriously question education systems that put a lot of emphasis on human capital and production of utilitarian robots instead of enhancing the capabilities of a full person as Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen puts it?

Are our children students given the adequate competencies that can foster peaceful and sustainable societies across the world?

UNESCO MGIEP’s Roundtable on Education for Humanity, chaired by Nobel Laureate Ms Leymah Gbowee, aims at examining how we can transform education systems into a more humanistic and holistic system that imparts 21st century competencies such as Critical inquiry, firing Gandhi neurons, and moral courage to change across learners to develop conscious, caring, and aware global citizens who are at peace with themselves, their fellow beings and their planet at large.
