The UNESCO MGIEP team comprises a committed group of professionals with a wide range of backgrounds and competencies. They are all inspired by the same ideals of an inclusive, connected and peaceful future for this world, which have defined the founding vision of the institute.

Dr. Anantha Duraiappah (Director)

Dr. Anantha Duraiappah is the Director of the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) based in New Delhi, India. MGIEP is the first Category 1 Institute in the Asia-Pacific region.

An experienced environmental-development economist, he plays a key role in positioning MGIEP as a leading research institute on education for peace, sustainable development and global citizenship.

Professor Duraiappah received his PhD in economics from the University of Texas in Austin, USA. He has authored numerous books and journal articles on environmental and developmental issues. Anantha also serves presently as the Policy Forum Editor for The Journal of Human Development and Capacity. He is a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS), a Founding Fellow of the Human Development and Capability Association, and a visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

In his previous post at the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), he initiated and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He was the Co-Chair of the Biodiversity Synthesis Group of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment commissioned by the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and founding director of the Inclusive Wealth Report released at the Rio+20 Summit in 2012.

Dr. Duraiappah is presently focusing on researching and exploring how “Firing Gandhi Neurons” can be integrated into the educational curricular of the formal, informal and non-formal education systems around the globe.

 

 

Abel Caine

Senior Project Officer

Mr CAINE is a Senior Project Officer of the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) leading the Youth Programme, and Communications Team.

As the Lead for the MGIEP Youth Programme, Mr Caine supervises a team of 5 professionals implementing comprehensive, global projects to empower youth to become champion educators for peace, sustainable, and global citizenship, and chief implementers of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As Head of the Communications Team, Mr Caine supervises 3 professionals to globally promote the mandate and unique activities and results of the Institute including traditional and social media, Annual Reports, and the flagship-event Talking Across Generations (TAG).

Mr Caine brings in over 20 years of experience from the private sector, Government of Fiji, and UNESCO in open ICT solutions for sustainable development.  He was a Programme Specialist at UNESCO Headquarters Knowledge Societies Division in Paris, France (6 years) and worked as the Adviser for Communication and Information in the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States in Apia, Samoa, (5 years) before joining UNESCO MGIEP in January 2016.

Nusrat Jahan

Finance & Administrative Officer

Prior to joining UNESCO, Nusrat served as Head of Finance for UNDP Bangladesh for 6 years. As Head of Finance, she was charged with strengthening and aligning Financial Management function including Treasury, Budget, Resource Planning and Implementation of Cost Recovery Policy, Extra-Budgetary Management. Under UNDP’s Staff Technical Enhancement Programme (STEP), she worked on cost recovery regarding financial sustainability of UNDP CO. She developed a quick reference guide on Cost recovery which has been released to global management practice network.

Yoko Mochizuki

Project Officer, Rethinking Education Programme

Yoko Mochizuki heads the Rethinking Education Programme. Prior to joining UNESCO MGIEP, she was a Programme Specialist at the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) section of UNESCO Paris and ESD Specialist at the United Nations University. She has a PhD in Comparative Education and Sociology from Columbia University, New York, USA.

Aditi Pathak

Programme Officer, Innovating Learning Programme

Aditi PAthak holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the Delhi School of Social Work. She has previously worked with various NGOs and think tanks such as The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). As a member of the Innovations team, she will take the lead on the Transformative Learning Labs programme.

Nitika Jain

Associate Programme Analyst

A M.Ed. in Comparative and Global Studies in Education and Development from the University of Hong Kong, she specializes in the areas of comparative education, sustainable development, and gender studies. Previously she worked as a Research Assistant at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Sajid Sheikh

Programme Coordinator

A Delhi University Graduate with a Post-graduate Diploma in Advertising & Communications, Sajid Sheikh was previously working as a copywriter/brand strategist at a digital marketing agency. In his current capacity, at UNESCO MGIEP, he works on the Youth Initiatives.

Radhika Bhatnagar

Associate National Officer (Communications and Social Media)

Radhika Bhatnagar manages the content for the website, blog, social media and provides support to the programme teams for communication-related initiatives. She brings in five years of journalistic experience with two of India’s leading English dailies. She was awarded a Chevening Scholarship (2014-15) from the British Government for a master’s degree in International journalism from City University London.

Namita Rastogi

Programme Assistant

Namita Rastogi has a master’s degree in Computer Application. She brings with her vast experience of 20 years in the areas of administration, accounts, training, HR & counselling. She has worked for private sector as well as organizations /companies such as Sector Skills Council (SSC) NASSCOM, NIIT, Hero Mindmine.

Siddharth Prakash

Administrative Assistant

Siddharth Prakash brings in nearly 5 years of experience from Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Hilton Hotel. Among his new functions, he is working closely with Administration and Programme unit on various areas such as providing administrative and procurement services/supports to all sectors at UNESCO MGIEP. He holds B.Sc degree in Hotel Management from Amity University.

Piyali Sarkar Debnath

Project Officer

Piyali Sarkar Debnath has an MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University with specialization in gender and political economy. She has worked as a development professional on diverse issues like human rights, education, inclusion, migration and gender. She currently serves as a Programme Officer for the Youth programme at UNESCO MGIEP.

Deepika Joon

Programme Officer

Deepika takes care of Youth Initiatives at UNESCO MGIEP. She has previously worked for the Ministry of Rural Development (Government of India), and The Energy and Resources Institute (Delhi) on Youth and Education for Sustainable Development.

Sana Khan

Communications Officer

An MSc in Development Administration and Planning from University College London, Sana brings to the table her experience in Communications. In her current role, she focusses on harnessing the potential of information technology for establishing the Institute as a global resource centre on EPSD.

Anamika Gupta

Programme Officer

Anamika holds a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies from the European Peace University and has worked as a journalist across print, broadcast and online medium. At MGIEP, she is working on the Gaming and Learning Labs programmes for informal learning on EPSD.

Richa Ahluwalia

Programme Assistant

Richa supports the Innovations team as Programme assistant. A Masters in Economics, she has extensive experience in administration and has worked with a number of diplomatic missions and internationals organisations in Delhi.

Komal Bhatia

Senior Administrative Assistant

As Senior Administrative Assistant, Komal is responsible for managing the Institute’s budget as well as the daily finances and administration. She has previously worked at UNDP and the World Bank.

Shankar Musafir

Programme Officer

Shankar strongly believes in experiential, participatory and contextual learning processes. He is currently working on the “State of EPSD” report for the Asia Pacific region and embedding EPSD in curricula.

Ryoma

Guardian

Handcrafted in Japan, Ryoma provides constant companionship to the Director. At UNESCO MGIEP, Ryoma is responsible for taking care of the Director’s office in his absence and providing support and supervision to ensure smooth functioning of the organisation.

Kanika Mathur

HR & Admin Assistant

Kanika Mathur brings over 6 years of experience from various MNC’s like Adobe, Genpact and Nestle. Prior to joining us Kanika worked in Evalueserve where she worked as HR Business. As HR Assistant she is responsible for all varied core HR activities, like recruitment, appraisals , employee engagement, training and development, etc.

SIMON KUANY KIIR KUANY

Associate Project Officer

Simon has an MBA from Symbiosis International University on an Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Symbiosis International University Joint scholarship. A youth activist and blogger, president of former students’ council at Symbiosis International University, Simon was a MGIEP Youth Delegate at the UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris France, the International Conference on ESD in Ahmedabad, India and a panellist for TAG in New Delhi, India. He has written a yet-to-be published memo/book Enlightened Darkness about his growing up in conflict and war and his search for peace. At UNESCO MGIEP, Simon works as part of the LIBRE and Campus Ambassador programmes.

 

Archana Chaudhary

Project Coordination Officer
Archana manages partnerships and fundraising as the Project coordination officer at MGIEP. She has  been the National Coordinator of CampusFrance India, a French government agency for promoting higher education cooperation between India and France for a decade. She has also headed the communication and fundraising service of the Institut Français en Inde for 4 years where she helped in creating bilateral cultural cooperation projects and conceptualising and implementing CSR projects with several companies. Archana has been a consultant to higher education institutes for their India specific strategy and has also served as Director training and placement for engineering and management institutes. She holds a  civil engineering degree from NIT Kurukshetra , a post graduate diploma in personnel management and an executive certification in brand management and corporate communication.

Pratibha Rana

Secretarial Assistant

Pratibha Rana has a Masters degree in Public Administration and approximately 14 years of experience in the field of administration. Previously she was working with the TATA Trust in the capacity of Office Manager. Previously, she has also worked with PATH, World Health Organisation and Plan International. At UNESCO MGIEP,  she is responsible for providing administrative and secretarial support to the Director.

Nandini Chatterjee Singh

National Project Officer

Nandini Chatterjee Singh is a cognitive neuroscientist and heading the Difference Learning Programme at UNESCO MGIEP. At her laboratory at the National Brain Research Centre (of India) she uses behaviour and neuroimaging to study brain circuits for Language, Literacy and Music.

Her research shows that learning in the native language is the key to functional literacy. Her research also focuses on emotion and music where she studies the rasas underlying different North Indian Classical ragas and their possible role in communicating with children on the autism spectrum. She is passionate about achieving universal literacy by 2020.

 

 

Akriti Mehra

Communications Specialist

Akriti holds a Bachelors Degree in Communication Design (NIFT, New Delhi) & an MBA from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (Sydney, Australia) with over 7 years of experience in Brand Management / Communications, having worked with advertising agencies, event management companies and several large corporations globally (including ITC Limited, India and Siemens, Singapore). In her most recent assignment, Akriti served as the Brands & Marketing Services Manager for ITC Hotels @ Divisional Headquarters and was responsible for the overall brands & communications strategy, the leisure brand marketing strategy and various loyalty programs.

Alongside, Akriti is a trained graphic designer and has worked as Research Assistant for the Macquarie Graduate School of Management – with focus on Social Entrepreneurship, Corporate Social Responsibility and Organisational Behaviour. She has also co-authored and published a paper on ‘Impact Measurement in Social Enterprises: Australia and India’ in the Social Enterprise Journal.

 

Ms.Nishtha Bindal

Project Coordination Officer – TECHH

Nishtha holds a Post Graduate degree in Computer Applications & Technology and has more than 14 years of experience in the Marketing and Events Industry. She has an excellent track record of handling various portfolios including Marketing Initiatives, CRM/ ERP Product Management, Business Development and Process Implementation. Nishtha is a Strategic Conference specialist with excellent speaker management and content development abilities and possesses very strong interpersonal, communication, planning & negotiation skills. She is apt in onsite event handling and execution, large projects management and client servicing. She loves travelling, reading and cooking.

Sandhya Saxena

Administrative Assistant

Sandhya has a Masters in Social Science from the Delhi University and another Masters in Population Studies from IIPS, Mumbai, which she completed last year.  She brings in several years of experience in the social development sector beginning with Oxfam, America and various UN Agencies. Her job profile has largely been to support the admin-finance function and project implementation activities. Previously, Sandhya served as Project Assistant to UNDP’s Access to Justice for Marginalized Communities Project.  She also actively contributed to the formulation of teaching-learning modules/IEC material for Adolescent Education Programme in her previous assignments. Sandhya is passionate about music, gardening and imparting basic education to empower the deprived sections of the society in the vicinity.
