#KindnessMatters: Volunteering for diverse causes is his way of showing kindness
Ahmed Waheeb Ali, a 28 year old from Luxor, Egypt, is an exemplar of volunteerism. He volunteers in civil society organizations for causes like fighting addiction and abuse, raising awareness for health issues facing young people and adolescents, empowering girls, and campaigning against Female Genital Mutilation.
I graduated and moved to volunteer work in the field of civil society organizations through charity and medical convoys in poor villages.
In 2010, I joined the ranks of the volunteers in the Fund for the fight against addiction and abuse. A team was established over this period and we conducted many educational activities in schools and youth centers through the programs of youth leaders to combat addiction and smoking.
In October 2013, I joined Peer Education Network as an Associate Educator, which is active in the field of reproductive and sexual health for adolescents and youth, combating gender-based violence and combating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
As a volunteer, I cooperated with my colleagues in many activities and educational campaigns aimed at raising awareness and behavior modification. Here is a list in some of the events and campaigns I’ve organized or participated in:
- T-bound campaign to empower girls during the period, 2014 to 2017
- Campaign against FGM during 2015 and 2016
- Organized a ten day activity to raise health awareness of young people and adolescents
- Egyptian and Syrian youth came together in August 2017 for a three-day campaign to promote peace. During this campaign, a national camp for more than 200 young men and women was held. The campaign also included educational seminars on the goals of sustainable development and resolution 2250 on youth, peace and security.
I have participated in many volunteer activities, relief, sports activities and various missions to provide first aid services. I have also received training and attended educational seminars to raise awareness on the importance of international humanitarian law and the dissemination of human values and peace among members of society.
As a lawyer from 30th October 2010 to 31st March 2013, I volunteered at the Human Rights Committee at the Bar Association, where it was concluded that the fight against violence and extremism is through-
- Awareness and education through peer education techniques and performing arts
- The rejection of the values of peace and humanity from childhood through educational curricula
- Develop the basic infrastructure of the population and meet their needs through the integration of civil society institutions with the government
- Develop the spirit of volunteering among adolescents and young people in order to serve and develop their communities
