The project to embed concepts of peace and sustainable development in textbooks of Sikkim is progressing steadily with the Second workshop for textbook authors organised in Gangtok from 20th-22nd of May 2018. As the project gathers momentum, Anantha Kumar Duraiappah, Director MGIEP also visited Sikkim to meet the Minister of Education, Mr R B Subba , to apprise him about the developments of the embedding project.

The embedding project is conceptualised as a continuous and comprehensive capacity building of textbook authors. The project resource people have been doing online capacity building of textbook authors after the first workshop in February. Skype video conference, emails and even whatsapp has been used for these online mentoring sessions.

In the months between the February and May workshops, textbook authors were assimilating, researching and exploring preliminary content for the chapters of the textbooks. This included looking for local contexts from culture, geography and language of Sikkim amongst others to create textbooks which are locally grounded. The May workshop marked a beginning with textbook authors starting to create early drafts of examples of chapters, which went through participatory feedbacks as well as feedback from facilitators.

The 40 odd textbook authors would now continue to work on components of textbooks complimented with online mentoring by resource people until they meet for the third and final MGIEP workshop to be held in August.
