Vijana Assembly in partnership with the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP)’s YES Peace Network is organising a two-day event, titled “Tanzania National Youth Assembly”, which will bring together about 900 youth in the country. The event will be held from November 3-4, 2017, at the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA), in Arusha, Tanzania, with special focus on promoting values of peace, global citizenship and sustainability. Vijana Assembly is expecting that all delegates who attend the conference will become ambassadors and promoters of peace and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their respective communities.
The Tanzania National Youth Assembly is currently playing the role of strategic substitute of the National Youth Council (that focuses to represent the voices and concern of the young people in the country), which is yet not in existence in Tanzania. According to the National Census of 2012, 78.6% (35,313,077) of the total population of Tanzania is under the age of 35 and yet there is no independent body that represents the voices of these young people in Tanzania.
Over the course of two days, participants will be empowered to follow the path of becoming responsible and active global citizens, and will be educated on how to handle violence and build peace in the society. Through this platform, it is expected that the awareness of global citizenship will significantly increase.
VIJANA ASSEMBLY will work together with the youth when they apply what they learn through this platform in starting initiatives that promote peace and global citizenship. Post the event, an online forum will be established through the Vijana Assembly, in which the youth will have the ability share, learn discuss, engage on how they can become leaders of positive change in their communities. The Assembly also will prepare and submit a Resolution to the Minister of Youth in Tanzania on the need to establish the National Youth Council in Tanzania.
